6 Reasons to Choose British Flowers

When it comes to buying flowers, many people opt for imported varieties without considering the benefits of choosing locally grown blooms. I do understand that it’s the quick and easy option to just grab a bunch at the supermarket BUT there are many reasons (6 in this blog post) why you should choose British flowers over imported ones. From supporting local businesses to promoting sustainability, here are six reasons why you should choose British flowers.

Promoting Sustainability

Imported flowers have a much larger carbon footprint than locally grown flowers due to the long distance they have to travel to reach their destination. By choosing British flowers, you are reducing the environmental impact of your purchase. Locally grown flowers require less transportation and packaging, resulting in a MUCH smaller carbon footprint.

British flowers are grown in accordance with the seasons, meaning you can enjoy a variety of blooms throughout the year. Think and act more seasonally; look outside to see what’s growing- ask yourself if it’s really necessary to be buying red roses in February?
let’s push back against the societal tide that we should show our love by buying chemically infused roses and instead buy British flowers which are fresher and have just as long vase life.

By choosing seasonal flowers, you are also supporting the natural growth cycle of plants and promoting biodiversity- something our planet will very much thank us for.

Supporting Local Businesses

By choosing British flowers, you are not only supporting a local business like BRIDE AND BLOOM but also the local flower farmers who I buy flowers from. Buying from local flower growers helps to keep money within the community and supports the livelihoods of many small business owners which helps to create a stronger and more sustainable local economy.

Supporting Native Plants

As mentioned above, choosing British flowers also means supporting the growth and preservation of native plants. Many imported flowers are grown in monocultures, which can have a negative impact on the environment and local ecosystems. By choosing British flowers, we help to maintain a diverse and healthy environment for our native plants and wildlife.

Quality & Freshness

British flowers are known for their high quality and freshness. This is because they are grown and harvested locally, meaning they spend less time in transit and can be enjoyed at their peak. Many of the local growers that I work with could be considered organic growers as they choose to work with the natural eco system rather than spray everything with pesticides and other chemicals. They understand the importance of “pests” such as slugs, aphids, weevils as they are, in turn, food for wasps, ants and ladybirds. All of which play an important part to create a balanced eco-system.

Supporting Tradition & Heritage

Choosing British flowers also means supporting a rich (and often forgotten) tradition of flower growing in the UK. Numerous flower growers in Britain have been involved in this industry for multiple generations, transferring their wisdom and skills – check out Crosslands Flower Nursery, the Real Flower Company or Smith & Munson– all of which grow on a much larger scale to local growers and employ many staff which supports local British business.

So, there we have it – there are many reasons why you should choose British flowers over imported ones. From supporting local businesses and promoting sustainability to enjoying seasonal blooms and preserving native plants. Choosing British flowers is a great way to make a positive impact on your community and the environment. So next time you’re in need of some beautiful blooms, consider choosing British flowers and see the difference for yourself.
