How’s the wedding planning going? Whether you are just engaged or further along with your plans you might be wondering what and who to book when?

Today’s blog explores what to consider when planning your Wedding Flowers – when, what and how so here are my insights and tips for what to think about and when to book your Wedding florist.

Typically, and I speak for my own business, most of my couples are booking me 18 months to one year ahead of their wedding date. So, for example, a couple marrying at the end June in 2026, would be getting in touch any time (give or take)  from November 2024  to June 2025. This is actually quite nice, as it not only gives us time to explore their ideas but to consider all the flowers that are blooming at the one year mark ahead of their own Wedding. I use social media like any other creative business and do like to post BTS moments of weddings I’m working on. So it is a good visual reference for couples to be so they can see what might be flowering for their own wedding.

Your Consultation Call

If you were to jump on a consultation call with me to plan Your Wedding Flowers, we would be looking through imagery of flower designs that you absolutely love and find inspirational. This creates the starting point of your floral aesthetic along with your Wedding Venue. Because of course depending on the space it may make it more viable for an outdoor Arch vs a Hanging install.

During the call I will guide you through images as quite often on Pinterest, we often find images that are edited with filters and often “floral looks” are not as logistical or feasible in real life.

Pinterest

I do absolutely love Pinterest; it is a creative’s heaven and a great way to showcase creative photoshoots. In short, we creatives throw sensibility out of the window – anything to create beauty… SO it’s not in fact always ideal to fully immerse yourself in photos that are styled to the Nth degree.

So for example long tables, filled with sprawling flowers down the middle looks incredible BUT is definitely not an option for those choosing to have sharing platters. Where will the food go? Oh and the wine! Lol
Instead consider smaller arrangements or groupings of bud vases that can easily be moved or placed to allow for the room needed for your caterers.

Style, Colour & Balance

So, in terms of the aesthetic of your Flowers, I really encourage you to look at what you are drawn to. The colours but also are your images flower heavy? As in is there any foliage or none at all?

Maybe alot of the images you like are full of big round face flowers (things like Roses, Peonies, Ranunculus, Cosmos- round flower heads) or perhaps you prefer daintier, smaller flower types like Cornflowers, Nigella, Buttercups? These can be particularly pretty for smaller, more delicate style bouquets and arrangements. Or maybe you love a very foliage heavy look?

And as for colour – let’s take a pink palette for example – is it all pink? Which tones of pink? With hints of white or maybe only a touch of pink and more of a focus on whites & creams. Pops of colours are great too – really work out what it is you love about palette and if still in doubt I’ll gladly guide you through.

Foliage for the win

Foliage is often considered a cheaper alternative, especially when dressing long guest tables. Unfortunately garlanding is very time consuming and takes a considerable amount of foliage to create. Smaller sections of garlanding can work just as well and give some flexibility for space on the tables.

It is also worth knowing that Eucalyptus is not great through the Summer months- it has alot of new growth and it just flops out of water so other foliage’s should be explored- Ivy, Olive or Holme Oak could all be options pending the time of year of your wedding.

TO SUMMARISE…

Planning Your Wedding Flowers should be an enjoyable experience but it can definitely become a little overwhelming if you’ve been scrolling imagery for too long. This is really when my expertise come in and I can help you navigate and hone down your Wedding Flowers.

  • WHEN – Ideally, get in touch with florists 12-20 months in advance of your wedding especially if it is a key Summer date!
  • COLOURS – what colours are you drawn to? Consider what colours you like wearing if you’re stuck !
  • DISCOVER- your palette balance – all pink or with hints of white or in reverse? Maybe you want 90% soft pinks & a 10% pop of bright??
  • EXPLORE – try to ascertain from your pinned images what it is that you like about the image.  If you’re lucky you may find an image that hits your style and colour palette but if not, just filter by one or the other and we can discuss on your call.
  • CHALLENGE yourself to find imagery you don’t like too and explore why- maybe too much foliage or not enough white for you.
  • FLOWERS vs FOLIAGES- are you drawn to a flower heavy look or one with more foliages?
  • HOW would you describe your dream Floral aesthetic?
(Romantic? Sophisticated? Bright Meadow? Woodland floor? Hedgerow? Country cottage garden? Mediterranean?)
  • WHAT works or what have you seen done at your venue before? Maybe your venue is a stunning Country Garden House with large windows and fireplaces – these make great focal features but similarly might not been your thing. Your florist is there to help and guide you. To make suggestions that suit you and your Floral aesthetic.
